Here's a triple-event MACO commemorative medal from 1988: 1) 125th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, 2) 125th Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and 3) 50th Anniversary of Eternal Light Peace Memorial at the Gettysburg, PA Battlefield..

MACO was located in Danbury, Connecticut at the time.

Thanks Coinfrog! I think so as well. I'll be gifting it to my brother; I think it will go nicely with the 2016 silver Mark Twain commemorative coin I gave to him last Christmas.

Did not know the HOF medals were ever deployed that way. . .Looks like someone at the Hannibal PO ( or Chamber of Commerce ? ) took the initiative to create a great keepsake. The medal was issued in 1963. . .it would be a fun journey to discover how that FDC combo came about. . . what's the name embossed on the back of the envelope ? I can make out the word "COVERS" but not the word to the left. . .

Thanks for sharing that, igwt79. . Nice Xmas gift.

"Jonal covers" ... it's actually embossed on the back of the envelope.

Edit: Actually, I was more interested in the HOF medal because of you cptbilly!

Below is a long read, so skip if you're not interested.

All I found from internet and AI searches is below:

"The Jonal cover featuring Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was issued by the Jonal Company, which was known for producing limited-edition commemorative covers. The cover, with the hand-painted design and bronze medallion, was part of a special Mark Twain tribute."

I found information stating that the original was issued in 1961 with a bronze medallion, but that is not the one I have. Further research below appears to indicate that this one is from a later issue, since the postmark is 1972. Not sure about the accuracy of the information, but this is all I could gather:

"The 1972 Mark Twain Jonal cover you're referring to is part of a special commemorative issue created by the Jonal Company, which produced collectible postal covers to honor significant historical figures and events. In 1972, the Jonal Company released this limited edition cover to celebrate Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), but it wasn't related to a major milestone like his birth anniversary. Rather, it was part of the Jonal Company's broader efforts to create ongoing tributes to important figures in American history, including literary giants like Twain.

Here are some key details about the 1972 Mark Twain Jonal cover:

1. Date of Issue:
The cover you have with the postal mark dated 1972 likely commemorates some aspect of Mark Twain's life or legacy that year. While this wasn't the 100th anniversary of his death (which occurred in 1910), it could have been connected to another literary or cultural event or a renewed interest in Twain's works.
2. Design and Features:
The cover features a bronze medallion of Mark Twain, which was a hallmark of Jonal Company commemorative covers. These medallions were often embossed or affixed to the cover itself.
The cover was typically hand-painted, adding uniqueness and artistic flair to each issue. These covers were often customized, making each one a piece of art.
A commemorative stamp featuring Mark Twain was likely included, often with a special cancellation mark from the Jonal Company or a postal station.
3. Postal Mark and Cancellation:
The postal cancellation mark on your cover dated 1972 indicates that it was mailed out in that year. The cancellation might feature unique elements of Twain's legacy or a specific postmark chosen for the release.
4. Limited Edition and Collectibility:
The Jonal Company was known for producing limited edition covers, so your 1972 Mark Twain cover is likely one of a small run, which makes it a collectible item.
Over the years, these Jonal covers have become increasingly sought after by collectors of both philatelic items (stamp collectors) and Mark Twain memorabilia.
5. Context of 1972:
While not tied to an anniversary like his birth or death, the 1972 cover likely coincided with ongoing cultural interest in Mark Twain's work. The 1960s and 1970s saw a resurgence in interest in classic American literature, with figures like Twain receiving more public recognition.
Conclusion:
The 1972 Mark Twain Jonal cover is part of the Jonal Company's effort to produce collectible, hand-painted, and commemorative covers. While the 1972 issue isn't tied to a major milestone like Twain's 100th anniversary of death (1910), it was produced as a tribute to the lasting legacy of Mark Twain. The bronze medallion, hand-painted artwork, and commemorative stamp make this cover a valuable item for collectors of both philatelic history and Mark Twain memorabilia."

You hit a home run with that research, igwt. . .thank you.

FWIW: If you would like a scan of the HOF for GA brochure that came with the medal, drop me a note and I'd be glad to send it along.

Enjoy your weekend.
