1964 Dollar KM#58 - Difference Between Specimen Proof And Business Strike?

flyank Valued Member United States 77 Posts	Posted 11/07/2016 4:06 pm I picked up a small collection of Canadian coins as part of a larger collection. The Collector had passed and his family was liquidating his estate. He had a handful of 1964 Dollars (KM#58) and one of them is definitively different than the others. It has mirrored fields and frost like devices. Is there any more definitive way to tell business from specimen proof on this type coin? They were all loose and raw, no original packaging. ace_ftw Pillar of the Community Canada 1747 Posts	Posted 11/07/2016 6:56 pm I believe one way to tell is the edge, on the specimens the edge should be squared off, and the reeding all the way to the edge, the business strikes, have a curved (slight) and the reeding notably tails off before the edge. if you post a picture of the obverse and reverse then we can surely confirm. flyank Valued Member United States 77 Posts	Posted 11/08/2016 5:25 pm Thanks for the great suggestion on the edges. All are rounded and NOT squared off so they would not qualify as Specimen Proofs. Although the coins were poorly cared for you can see they have a mirrored field and frosty lettering. Report this Post to the Staff
ace_ftw Pillar of the Community Canada 1747 Posts	Posted 11/08/2016 5:42 pm it is very likely these were first off the dies, and put into pliofilm sets. its known that some of these were of higher quality strikes. however I cant see what you are describing from these images.
