Japan 500 yen 1989 Not very clear to those who can't read Japanese, but this is the much scarcer 1989 variety, minted in the name of Showa (Hirohito to WWII buffs) year 64. After a battle with cancer, he died on January 7, 1989. His son took the reign name Heisei and issued the bulk of Japan's 1989 coinage.

France silver 100 francs 1988. The USA is not the only country that 'recycles' old coin designs - the obverse showing the 'Genie de la Republique' by Augustin Dupre had appeared on gold coins since just after the Revolution.
