I've actually been trying to replace some of the denars and half groats in my 1500s lineup with more interesting coins, perhaps from German states, France, or England, etc.

Quote: Not sure if anyone here had bids in on them Correct: a very interesting pair of auctions last month indeed; two fantastic collections of 15th-17th century rechenpfennigs/jetons from The Netherlands, France, Germany and in particular Austria; the type of old collections that have very rare types or very high qualities There was a pre_1500 jeton from the Philip Le Beau, that was simply amazing, and hammered at 10 times the taxation, beyond my possibilities .... but I did not end up completely empty handed - in the following thread http://goccf.com/t/316451 CCF members are asked for help, as I can find no similar pieces on the internet; they are not dated, however, so uninteresting for the OFEY-collectors

In addition, I purchased on the same auction an extremely rare jeton coined in Brussels that according to Dugniolle should bears the date of 1538 - but my piece is variant that has no date. So I should ask jbuck whether or not such date-less coins that are variants from a type with known date is eligible for this thread.

Nice portrait, and nice round planchet on that Prussian coin! Also a very unusual obverse legend (something like "Justice and Faith Live"?) Here is a groschen/grosz from his neighbor to the east, Poland-Lithuania (Vilnius mint) from 1547:

Quote: whether or not such date-less coins that are variants from a type with known date is eligible for this thread. I'm quite sure that the answer is yes, especially as we get into the 15th Century and our options get more limited. Here is my twin brother to @pepactonius' coin. Due to the Polish connection with Prussia at this time, I have it attributed as Kopicki #3791.

On a more serious note ... I commented upthread on the unusual legend on the obverse of the 1547 Prussian coin. I also got the translation wrong. It is closer to "The just live on faith." Albert is quite an important historical figure. He became Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in 1511. After spending time with Martin Luther in 1523, he decided to break with Rome and the Holy Roman Emperor, aligning himself and the Prussian state with his uncle, Zygmunt I of Poland (who we will soon see in this thread), in the process establishing Prussia as a hereditary duchy, and one of the earliest principalities to embrace Lutheranism. I assume the legend refers to these events.

Ok very nice @tdz--good history to go with these coins. With a new year each day, it sometimes feels like this thread slips by too quickly. On the other hand, together we can go straight back in time for more than a year and a half at this pace.

1546: 1 solidus from the Archbishopric of Riga. The date (located to the top-left of the shield) is visible at the right angle—just not in any picture I take of this coin...

Quote: So I should ask jbuck whether or not such date-less coins that are variants from a type with known date is eligible for this thread. It does not need a date on it. If the date can be determined by other means and that date is a one year type (not a range of possible years), then it is eligible.

Here is another Groschen from the German Duchy of Prussia, but this one is dated 1546 AD. It is attributed as Kopicki 3790.
