Actually, I save ALL 1965 Washington quarters. I am betting on the fact that they will bring a premium in the future because they were the 1st year that clad Quarters were made.

Thanks for the market analysis on this issue, paralyse. Interesting. I'm one of those collectors who doesn't get bothered by the modern, post-silver coinage. Do I like the older silver issues better? Well, of course I do. However, for me a 1965 Washington quarter is just as much a part of the set as a 1964 or earlier date. I don't try to see it this way. It's just my natural thought process regarding silver and clad coinage within the same series.

Just think how many silver coins that 65 quarter had rubbed up against.

Yup. But more than that is when I find a 1969 Lincoln Cent with D mintmark or plain, 1909 plain.

The worst is when I find a 1942 nickel thinking it is silver and then when I see the reverse there is no mint mark above the building meaning it is not silver.

Great perspective and analysis, paralyse!

I don't really have an opinion on them, but of course I'd prefer if a '64 crossed my palm instead. For me, "hate" is a strong word in this case.

I really like the 1965s. They are a model example of coinage use in our modern society. Being the most used coin in circulation, from parking meters to vending and laundry machines, these coins have stood the test of time for 52 years yet and I'm excited to see just how far they will go into the future. There's no way you'd get the same kind of mileage out of silver.

The most worn quarters are the '65's but on average the '66 is much more heavily worn. This is caused by several factors but chiefly because the '65 is saved by some people and because the '65 trickled into circulation until 1975! Initially the mint and FED used LIFO accounting and there was no need to rotate their stocks. It was this that stopped me from collecting clad in those early years. As soon as you'd get a nice BU of some old clad you'd go to the bank and they'd have BU rolls and bags of it. Then in 1972 they switched to FIFO accounting and the race was on. But there were still so many '65 quarters in storage that they lasted until the stock was entirely rotated in 1975.

Conversely the '66 almost all went straight into circulation. I never saw BU examples after 1968.

Also the '66 was even more poorly struck making the coins appear slightly worn even in BU bags. A few people saved the new clads but they quit by '66 for the main part.

Almost every '66 quarter is between G and VG+. The '65 can be found in lower grades but only about 80% of them are in this grade range and the rest are mostly in F but VF's, XF's, and even low end AU's are seen once in a while.

Nice eagle reverse clad quarters are getting extremely difficult to find. It seems when I do see a higher grade it will often be an unattractive coin or a cull. Nearly 40% of the pre-1979 quarters in circulation now are culls.

There are only about 4 of these older quarters per roll and only a little more than 2 that aren't culls. And then these that aren't culls tend to be low grade.

These old quarters are going the way of the buggy whip and still nobody seems to notice. Most people mistakingly believe they are common in BU so they see no reason to care.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I hate the 1965 dimes and quarters, but 1971 halves are really irritating, as well as bicentennial halves and 1999 halves!

I have counterstamped over 300 1971D halves. Gotta do something to make them interesting.

As always, an excellent assessment by cladking. It sure piqued my curiosity. I may yet start a set of this series.

Now that I think about it, I have a few au/bu 65 quarters but only one decent au 66. I'll have to keep an eye out.

Probably not as much as 1964-D nickels.

In my last box of nickels, I encountered several pristine 1964D nickels. I saved them; I'm not sure how many of them in that kind of condition are left.

It certainly was a good year for nickels.

Are there any published statistics showing that first year of issue coins actually appreciate more than other years of the same series just because they are the first year?
