Likely because they are so common and not silver.

NSS -- IMO the key factors in determining whether or not a first year of issue will appreciate are mintage, availability, popularity, and length of time before the next major design change. Combine this with collector demand at the time of issue. Examples of a few types -- this is far from inclusive, of course, but gives an idea... Entire first year issue has major premiums -- 1793 Chain Large Cent - Low mintage, low availability, and same year design change to Wreath cent. Unknown popularity. No collector demand at time of issue = very very few were saved. 1793 Wreath cent -- see above. 1916 SLQ / 1916 all 3 mint Walkers - Low mintage, low availability, high collector demand. Part of first year issue has major premiums -- 1932 Washington quarter - Normal mintage at Philadelphia, lower at San Fran and Denver. Very popular because it was assumed it was going to be a one-year-only type. A large amount of Philly mint were saved in BU rolls due to collector demand. The San Fran coins had a low mintage, but the public was already conditioned that "S" mint coins were going to be scarcer or more valuable, so more were saved. The Denver coins had a low mintage, and were apparently not saved in BU in any major roll quantities. Result = 1932-S and (especially) 1932-D carry premiums; 1932-D has a premium in all grades, and 1932-S is actually scarcer in circulated condition than Uncirculated. 1916-D Mercury dime1909-S VDB Wheat cent - one year only design type, low mintage, low availability, high demand. First year of issue has no major premiums: 1864 2c (not counting SM), 1865 3CN, 1851 3CS -- Coins which were available but had low demand from the public and were not actively collected when issued. 1971 Ike dollar1979 SBA dollar, 2000 Sac dollar 1959 Lincoln Memorial cent2010 Shield cent 1986 ASE

I hate the 1965 quarters as well. Sometimes when I search through quarter rolls here in Canada I come across these 1965 American quarters. I get very annoyed and frustrated because if the quarter was a year older it would have been silver.

Anyone know if only the 1960's nickel with FS are hard to find or if the 1970's as well? I thought anything below the 60's with FS would be hard to find, but I have found a few 1940's with FS but seems like they are not as valuable?

Everytime I see a 65, I just wish the coin was 1 year earlier and that I got a silver 1964. The 1965s give me a feeling of let down haha

FS gets progressively more difficult through the '60's until 1971 when they are very easy. Most collectors would be surprised to know how difficult BU's are after 1964 since people quit saving new coins. A few dates are as common as the '50's nickels but some are quite tough.

Being from Canada I love all US coinage I can find, however the 65 - 67 quarters and dimes always get me because if these were Canadian coins they would be silver.

Quote: Are there any published statistics showing that first year of issue coins actually appreciate more than other years of the same series just because they are the first year? I would expect then to do worse than average because first year of issues are more frequently saved and therefore more available and typically in better condition.

I found this nickel on the floor at my local DICK'S Sporting Goods store. If only it had been either a dime or quarter.

I don't like the 1965 quarter either. However, I always keep them because their are the first year of the non-silver quarter. They are a nice landmark coin to collect, even if they aren't worth much outside of MS condition. I do the same with my Korean coins.

To be honest it has been what seems like forever since I have seen one of these in circulation. All I ever get back in change is State or ATB Quarters. I will have to make it a point to see how long it takes me to get a 1965 - 1998 quarter.

wow, I live 6 miles from the denver mint and get eagle backs all the time. This weekend, a 1967 dark toned quarter fooled me into thinking it was 1957 for a few seconds.
