So in a recent auction I was trying to bid on a few canadian and maritime decimals and was having no luck or I should at least some there was at least one other person that was "more" interested than I was.

As the auction continues, there's about 200 lots between the next two items that I'm interested in and have bookmarked. But I enjoy watching auctions and seeing what other items will go for. And one area which I have absolutely no knowledge in (merchant tokens and medallions) starts up in the auction and one particular lot had no bids. There was 2 dozen or so tokens, so I took a flyer and put in the minimum bid, because a few of the tokens looked really appealing.

Long story short... I win the auction, received my items and all last night I started doing some research on these new additions to my collection.

Holy crap what fun and what an education!
The piece that caught my eye was a Balmoral Oil token... it was just a really nice colour and had nice details, but I have now had to research a bit more on personal numismatist tokens, different merchants where they were located in canada the U.K. and U.S. and what services they provided, a bickford dollar, the zulu social aid and pleasure club, woodmen of the world... and so much more.

Not sure of the value of any of these tokens but from what I have researched already and past sales on ebay I think I did pretty good, although it wouldn't matter. This has really been a fun adventure.

Just wanted to share my experience as it's been really fun and enjoyable going out of what I would normally depict as my "comfort zone"

Cheers

There's just some great folks all around... Last night as I was trying to learn some more about a particular token I contacted an individual for further information.... He was able to help me out a lot! And now he's listed it on one of his websites.

If you come across anything from Atlantic Canada, especially NS or NB, I would be interested in seeing them. Didn't your signature use to have a link to a Facebook page, Redriver coins or something?

On a side note was this the TOREX auction? I had all my money tied up in the second Maritime Bank note so I could not bid on any tokens. I seen a few beauties there I would have loved to have had.

It was the G. Bell auction...

I'll have a really good look at them later on tonight... having 3 other friends over for a "show and tell" night... we drink a few rum... show off our most recent purchases talk coins and then I'm going to see if I can get them into a card or board game to make a real good night of it!

After all is said and done I'll post some pictures tonight or tomorrow... They'll still be in the 2x2's until I figure out which ones will be passed along or which ones I'll keep.
Rest in Peace

That site is great. I often think that all the information about those token would soon be lost forever if someone didn't keep track.

Enjoy your new stuff. It sounds like fun.
