I've been quite busy lately with work, but good to see new wonderful pieces being displayed. @beem - I love that beautiful Ethiopia Talari; very nice piece! @paul - nice pieces, especially that Regensburg taler @WCG - Thanks for sharing all of that insight. It's very interesting the things that draw us. The very first world crown I purchased was a Victoria 1845 Great Britain crown in XF+ condition that I got from ebay several years ago. Never did I imagine that I would be so sucked into this hobby and be willing to spend thousands of dollars on single pieces (back then it would have been simply inconceivable!), but I am glad it did. It has been a great journey and I've loved, and continue to love every minute of it. As for your sentiments about grading, I can wholeheartedly agree. I too purchase the vast majority of my coins raw. I would say over 95% of my collection is raw as I don't like slabs, but I do get the argument about liquidity and protection to family. As for the Sede Vacante theme, it is interesting you brought up Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth. This book has been one of the novels I wanted to read for a while. You kind of inspired me with your post so I picked up a copy about a week or so ago. I haven't started it yet but I am looking forward to the read. Separately, I have a few new great pieces to share. I'll post pics probably tomorrow or over the weekend.

I'll make a token effort with a pair of French crowns. An ecu to be exact of Louis XIV 1709 D (Lyon mint) in an NGC-64 holder. Also another French ecu: a Louis XVI Constitutional issue of 1792 A (Paris mint). Purchased well before slabbing of world coins was ever imagined.

Nice adds Gallienus. Really like the reverse on the 1792.

Thanks Scopru I should mention that I "think" the 1792-A is from Karl Stephens although these days few dealers carry world material in such grades. This reverse design was retained after the execution of Louis 16th in early 1793 [I think]. This was issued by "The Convention" which was a 500 person decision making body before "The Directory" took over. I have one of these, also very nice mint state: bought using a dealer rep at the NYICS in 1999 or 2000. I should say that I recall that NONE of these coins cost $1K. Such was the state of foreign coin collecting years ago.

@scopru Thanks for the comment. What happened on the 1793 is that actually I saw it in person in auction lots for the New York International. My wife made reservations to go out for dinner in NYC as there are no good restaurants near where we live in FL. Not wanting to leave things to chance, I had a dealer bid on it during dinner time. Now the piece to get is "The No Christian Date Ecu". It's similar to this but lacks the Christian Date (1793) and only relies on the French Revolutionary Date of L'An II. It proved so unpopular with the people that it was immediately discontinued and the Christian Date of 1793 was added. I'll add one more since I'm on France. This is Napoleon Bonaparte, 1811-A (Paris mint). This is in an NGC-63 slab which gave me difficulty in photographing it.
