Interesting find from a recent lot. Token Catalog lists J.F. Niederhauser as being from Iowa but does not show this particular token.

I have a few dozen bridge, tunnel, and commuter tokens.
They use a type of credit card system now to board trains and subways.
This capture also includes a Chuck E. Cheese game token,
they actually have the year minted on them. Here are some samples.

Here's a flashback to the olden days when I collected "The British World" way too broadly, using Jerry Remick's exhaustive Empire/Commonwealth catalog as my stockbook.

This extremely rare one-penny token is from Griquatown, originally a missionary settlement in South Africa's North Cape Province. With dies prepared by the noted Lauer firm of Nuremburg, a little over 50 of these were struck as "patterns" or samples used in Africa to promote the minting services of Otto Nolte & Co., another German firm. A hundred of an undated version were produced as well. Circulated examples of both varieties of this trial piece appear in NGC's census reports, but PCGS shows only MS60-66.

Back in 1993, I considered myself phenomenally fortunate to be able to acquire this from the late Phil Flanagan of Seattle.
