I've been looking through some exonumia from a lot I'd purchased back in the 1990's. So, definitely not new acquisitions, but I found these two taxation tokens interesting. They are the same except the one on the left has an error; Retailer's instead of Retailers' in the legend on the reverse. They were issued in 1935.   |

A new medal from the city of Utrecht in The Netherlands. Officially catalogued as "De Opening van het Verkeershuis" (1929). One year later however, the medal was used as a prize medal for a photography contest.  |

I picked up a lot of ~ 20 tokens because there was an irradiated dime and a token I recognized as rare. Figured the rest would be junk because the seller's pics were horrible, but they all turned out to be really good ones except 2. This is one of the goodies - 90th Replacement Battalion Open Mess 10¢ from the Viet Nam war.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Another from that lot. THE CLUB / W. H. SLEE, PROP. / SALOON GOOD FOR / ONE DRINK / AT THE BAR. This saloon was in operation 1902 - 1912 in Walden, Colorado.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Hondo Boguss, do we know who minted these US military tokens and where? I used to have a bunch from the Officer's Mess at a US base in Labrador -- Fort Pepperrell, and something at Goose Bay -- and I often wondered whether they'd been stamped out in a Pentagon sub-basement or perhaps on contract with a private mint, either locally or somewhere in the States. Or maybe by our own troops working "in the rear with the gear," which I suppose during the Vietnam War could have been at a staging base in Okinawa, Guam, or the Philippines.
Whatever, they're certainly low-tech enough that portable presses like the penny-stretchers we used to see in amusement parks -- or today's pet-shop nametag machines -- would have been sufficient to the task, I would think.

daltonista, I have absolutely no idea. The 90th Battalion one came in a lot and I know little about it. I do have 4 from Fort Polk (now Fort Johnson), as I collect Louisiana tokens and that Fort is only 45 miles north of me. Crawford and Farber (Louisiana Trade Tokens, 2nd Ed.) state that they were made by Meyer and Wenthe. Research yielded that this firm was located in Chicago and had manufactured every type of badge, token, etc. from the late 1800s until they were bought out in 1980. I could not locate a catalog from them more recent than 1915. The definitive book on military tokens is Paul A. Cunningham's Military Tokens of the United States: Domestic Issues, Vol. 1. (1995). Expensive, and not sure if Cunningham identifies manufacturers or addresses tokens used in overseas bases.   Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
