Canada Sudbury Big Nickel 1951. From Numista: Commemorative issue - Centenary of insulation and "Nickel" element designation. This medallion is big - 38 mm and 6.2 g - yet composed of aluminum!
Very nice, Spence!

Just kidding, Hondo!

A nice example.

Nice tokens and medal, Hondo. But why would they make a medal commemorating nickel from aluminum? Was nickel too expensive in 1951?

Thank you all! NumisEd, perhaps a nickel or cupronickel alloy medallion would have been too heavy or, more likely, expensive (it was a fundraising item).
Fantastic story, chrsmat71 - thank you for sharing it with us! Everything I knew about this medallion was learned on the Numista page: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ex...ia32989.html

Here is a recent Conder token purchase, kind of in the style of the cartwheel penny with the raised edge and incuse legends. Usual size and thickness for these type of coins, about 30 mm. Has edge lettering as well "PAYABLE IN LANCASTER LIVERPOOL & MANCHESTER"
