Thanks David. I believe that most of the contemporary stamps are made for general metal hobbyists or jewelry making. Some modern ones are custom made just for counter stamping pennies. I have one (which I'm not allowed to post on the forum due to its political nature) that I had custom made. In the 60s, 70s and 80s The Littleton Stamp and Coin Company sold a couple hundred different stamped Lincoln Cents to general collectors. The Yale Lock Company one I had just posted is an example of one where a stamp meant for something else (in this case a key) was struck on a Lincoln Cent. Generally before Littleton, stamps were made for the purpose of counter stamping. A great example of this are the Masonic counter stamps. I have several hundred unique stamps. I'm not sure if it was some rite of passage for a Mason to create their own or what. My attempts at learning about this have always been unsuccessful. I wish someone who is a Mason would enlighten me but I respect their secretive nature.

Interesting error on behalf of The Littleton Stamp and Coin Company. Somehow an Alaska counter stamped cent was stamped a second time with an Aries zodiac counter stamp. With the number of coins that they were stamping in 1974 I'm surprised I haven't ran across this more often.

Nice ones, chafemasterj! I like repousse coins and have a couple. Interesting that the error counterstamp wasn't tossed in the trash - perhaps they didn't notice it.

A 1936 LWC that has some engraving on it. On the obverse, above the date, there seems to be a date but it is so worn I can't read it. Been staring at it through my loupe and all I seem to get is 9.2.1 which appears to be gibberish.

The reverse on the other hand has U.S.S. Salerno Bay CVE-110 engraved at the top.

MOM in a heart counter stamp...

Looks like the 1984 Zincoln already has some corrosion issues.

I really enjoy finding counter stamps on older coins that aren't either numbers or names. Even though this is not a Lincoln Cent I find it a great example of what I'm talking about. A horse head counter stamp on a 1939 Liberty Walking half dollar...
