I wonder if at some time in the future, the government will just dispose of all the modern dollar coins...

Doubtful. The seigniorage is already earned and they are on the books at face value. Eventually the dollar bills will go ways and the dollar coins will have their day.

Calm down jbuck, I like IKE and the large dollar coins (peace & Morgan). The SBA I kinda like but they resemble a quarter too closely. The prez dollars not so much, but to each their own. John1

For me, it's the Three Cent series, nickel or silver.

You could make a case for any of the odd-denom coins if you tried. Not many 20 cent, Half Dime, Half Cent, etc. collectors. But I don't think that makes them unpopular, just more difficult to obtain full sets within budgets. As a fan of these oddballs I had to step up to defend us two- and three-cent fans. The only reason I have any prez dollars is because they come with the proof and uncirculated Mint sets. I wouldn't pursue them otherwise. I consider them uninspired designs as others have stated previously.

The clad quarter won this contest hands down until 1999 when the states coins came out. But now a few people are collecting the eagle reverse clad quarter.
The new series to beat is the clad dime. Almost nobody is collecting it.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I'm surprised at the sentiment toward the 3CNs here... they're one of my favorite classic designs! Feel free to send them over if you don't want 'em The SBA dollar is home to a variety or two that can fetch a very respectable premium. The president dollars have the godless dollars and a few double-punched edge lettering varieties, but I don't think any of those have held value like the SBA's. Last I read (5+ years ago) most godless dollars were worth about $80, down from $300+ at discovery.

I agree, the Prez dollars are not interesting. They look more like medallions than real money. And regardless of who it is, they all look the same. Same is true with the ATB and the more recent quarters. Regardless of the design, they all have the same layout and because of this they all look the same to me. And four design changes a year? It's too much.

I actually enjoy all the oddball denominations. I'm not a fan of collecting entire issues, though, because I don't have the money to. That's why I enjoy collecting type coins.

My vote is with the Ike dollars....big, clad, not a fan of the obverse design, (though the reverse is quite nice). Seldom if ever seen in circulation. Definitely not my favorite.
