Found this today in my pocket change. On the reverse side, the sum appears to have a protrusion. Die chip?

It is probably that. If it is flat, then it might be a coin contact mark. Most of the time a die chip is on the fields of a coin. So take a look and see if it is flat?

It actually casts a shadow so it's not flat.

Is is thicker on the field? That is probably where it is tallest. Often a die chip will look like a piece of chewed gum on an area.

Actually, it does look like a piece of gum, a little larger or close to the same size on the sun as on the field.

The reason it looks like gun is that the die actually breaks away leaving a void in that area. Thus the planchet fills in the void showing the rough edge of the inside part of the die as the highest point.
