Folks,

This 1974 D penny looks odd. Lincoln is missing half of his hair on his head. I don't see any scratches or gouges in the area. Wondering what this might be.

Thanks

Did you compare it to another small date?

John1.

Attached is a 1974 D small date. As you can see, there is a fully head of hair.

The last coin is a small date. The other coin is probably a large date.

My first thought was a type 1 large date, showing signs all around of heavy die polishing. Not necessarily all at once, but could've happened over time.

I don't think the mint charged extra for this type hair cut or creations. Thinking they threw them in as a bonus. Thanks, Doug.

No the hair is different on the large and small dates.

But now see the images a lot larger than my phone, it does look like a grease blockage on the hair. His hair looks like mint in the morning. But mine stands up like a turkey tail.
