1772 8 reales, Spanish Empire, Viceroyalty of New Spain, Mexico City mint. This is the first year of portrait coinage in silver for the motherland and New World colonies. The Mexico City mint initially chose to keep the orientation of the mintmark the same as the earlier pillar dollar and placed the assayers initials in the same fashion. In 1773 they would reverse their decision and keep all text in the same orientation, although the earlier issues were the same as 1772. This example is the rare variety where the assayers' initials are transposed from FM to MF.  Edited by jgenn
