Quote: Scored this today from a $1.25 in change. The quarter was an 04 poppy as well, but very ugly. Now I need the no colour one. Excellent!

Re the name Loonie The 1987 new style coin ii sided smaller diameter coin was intended to continue the voyager design on the reverse.....BUT the reverse dies disappeared in shipment to the Winnipeg mint. For fear of counterfeiting a new reverse was hastily put together ....the (in)famous reverse led to the popular description as the 'loonie'. When the the 2 dollar bill was phased out for a two part coin.....twonee (or toonie ) was a natural to become its slang name

Thanks for the post. It's a refresher for most folks here, but still may be informative to some people not as into loons. I like the tale. Has a definite appeal. Otherwise........no loonie. Besides, loonie fits better than Voyageurlewy. .

Got the 1st one in change today. Sorry to report, this one has the forehead mark as well. I really gave it a good look with an 8X loupe. You can see what's causing it to look black, but you can tip the coin to remove it, so that tells me the plating is full. When it's tipped properly, I see what look like tiny die chips, 3 in a sort of diagonal row, and another one near the row. So I have a theory, please die experts correct me. I think its just a weak strike. The "black" spot never even made contact with the obverse die. So I'm not seeing tiny die chips, I think it's just the metal trying to flow and fill it. 2nd theory. The strike on the eyes and hair are great. Do you think during the strike, the hair is robbing material from the forehead causing a weak strike, similar to the George VI 50 cents reverse? The reverse, on the loon, doesn't need much material, so it's not quite the same. .

Sometimes even I get lucky. Today I asked for 2 loonies instead of a toonie for my change. Then watched the cashier crack open a fresh mint roll. The new Oscar Peterson loonie has hit, and I was hopping, hoping it was going to be them. Didn't work out, but I still got 2 super fresh regular 2022's. No pic's until the wife's camera comes home. Very happy to report, no scar on the forehead with these ones. Trig, you're in for 1.
