In my ongoing quest for anything from Iran (I like the country and it currently has the world's lowest valued currency), I got one of these notes in UNC. When you hold it up to the light, the Ayatollah glares at you - the watermark is different than the big portrait. I think the watermark is the same portrait as used in the later series of notes, but who knows?

This is just a stock picture (I'm on a bit of an excursion, so no camera): my real serial number is (ÛµÛµ/Û¶)Û²Û³Û°ÛµÛ±Û¸.

Iranian notes are very accessible (thanks to a constant high rate of inflation): 100 rials doesn't make a single cent, coins are now issued up to 5000 rials, and the largest bank-note is 100,000 rials: $4 (or $8, depending who you talk to: the real value of the currency is apparently tenuous). There are notes of 500,000 and 1,000,000 rials, but these are bank-cheques rather than bank-notes: once deposited in a bank, they are destroyed! Regardless, with only $40 (or $80) down, you can own 1,000,000 rials - the cheapest way to be a millionaire in a currency that's still legal tender and in use. Unfortunately, there are talks of taking 4 zeros off the rial, and to prove this, the newest line of cheques (which look just like banknotes, security features included) bear the numbers "50" and "100" for 500,000 and 1,000,000 rials.

Anyway, it's hours of fun (really), and my next goal is the 5,000-rial note with the Omid satellite: the first satellite produced and launched entirely in Iran (not many countries have done this). I thought it would be cool to get a space-themed 5,000 note to match the upcoming (November 2013, keep your eyes out!) Canadian space-themed $5 note.

I am making it a point to upgrade, at least monthly, one cent from my collection now that it is complete, so this is my latest upgrade. I know it's nothing fancy but it's my newest purchase.

Intersting note nalaberong, and not quite the Arabic digits that Pheroow taught us in that odd serial number.

Yeah, Farsi has differences in the 4, 5, and 6.

Apparently, though, the language is more similar in structure to German or Hindi than Arabic and is easier to learn for native English speakers.

Love the 1942/1 dime!

Just got these in the post from a friend in South Africa - I sent her a 'wants list' and she went through her change to see if she had any coins I was missing!

It seems to be a productive agreement. Nice acquisitions!
