Quote: I have heard stories of key date Lincolns being released "into the wild" by wealthy numismatists. I never heard of an S-VDB being cast away though. I believe I read a few of those stories too. They DID release a lot of key date coins including S-VDB's.

Someone just posted about finding a 3 cent silver piece as change from a vending machine under the topic "I Was Supposed To Get A Dime Back From A Vending Machine, But I Got This!" Maybe someone IS releasing valuable coins into circulation.

I did find an 1863 IHC in a dime roll the other day. No way that wasn't intentional in my opinion. I hope I find more of these supposed special wild releases

For several years they did "coin drops" at the ANA conventions spending key date coins including SVDB's. They publicied the drops but none of the coins they spent were ever brought back in to the convention. One year a SVDB DID show up, but it wasn't the one they spent. That isn't surprising though. You show up with a camera crew filming you making a purchase and paying for it then everyone goes away. You may not know what he gave you, but are you going to hand it back out in change? Also I would bet that as soon as the cameras turned off and they left some of the people with them immediately bought the coin from the vender.

What I search and release via Mint sets and Coin rolls searches are keepers to somebody else. If that 1909S-VDB was released by a big time collector, they probably have higher grades of this and that penny was in their spender pile.

Fantastic find. Remember don't clean it. Sometimes a kid takes parents coins and spends them. Also, house robberies too have coins stolen and spent. Lots of reasons such coins end up in change.

My luck does not let me find things like that. Congrats on a great find.

Thanks for the many inquires on this penny. When I say in the wild, literally found in my pocket change through the drive-thru! This is the second time I've found something. The other being a mint error partial copper plating 1996 penny which I ended up sending off to be graded and checked out as real. I've seriously been hit with the hunting bug looking at every coin that I get from change. Always adding an extra dollar to my bill to make sure I get change back. I've tried to take better pics of the coin... hopefully they're clearer for you gurus... I've definitely haven't cleaned it and am using a glove to not further anymore dirty fingers or damage to it. I will be sending it off to be checked out and hopefully graded.

Much better pics! I hope that scratch on the obverse isn't as bad as it appears in the pic. Nonetheless, that's quite a find.

I think the scratch details it. But a remarkable occurrence for sure.

Here's a close up of the V.D.B. I'm using my iPhone to take photos and using the optimizer...

Seems like it has a legitimate shot at being the real thing!
