1839 Large Cent (the so-called "booby" head variety I believe):

In my opinion 1840 and beyond is when my interest in collecting old copper really fades. The years of so many distinctive varieties has now passed. Collecting and determining varieties was fun in the earlier years but in the late 1830's the new coin presses eliminated most of the double profiles and other alignment markers that identified specific varieties. For amateurs like myself determining varieties for the rest of the large cent series is difficult and bordering on impossible in most years. 1840 Large Cent N-5

Collecting the late dates can be a bit of a chore, but there are still plenty of scarcities and "naked eye" varieties to hunt down -- 1844/81, 1851/81, 1855 w/knob on ear, the strong RPD's of 1847 and 1848, the triple RPD 49 for 1849, 1846 small date/tall date, 1855-1856 slanted/upright 5's, 1857 small date/large date, etc. 1838 N-4 MDS, bisecting die crack obv. 1838 N-5 1838 N-10c VLDS, massive reverse Cud Fanz of '39 Representing! 1839 N-5 1839 N-7 1839 N-8 x 3 coins, one with counterstamp 1839 N-9 1839 N-10 1839 N-11 1839 N-13 1840 N-4 Small Date, rough!
