I just saw a photograph of the 1894s being auction at the upcoming ANA Fair in Chicago. The coin in question was previously auction through Superior Galleries as Lot 617 in 1985 where it sold for $50,600. (It sold again in 1988.) The offering in 1985 displayed an almost white luster with well defined devices. The current 2019 offering has now re-toned, mottled if you will, with subdued devices and concealed flaws. Verified as having been dipped, but not specified on the holder. Still, a rare and prized coin that I myself would bid on if I had the funds.

Which poses the question to the community. Do you prefer coins in their original form, natural appearance from age?
Or do you prefer them bright, as in those from the craze of the 80's and '90's? And finally, toned, and by what degree?

There's toning and then there's toning. Light original toning would usually be my preference on uncirculated coins, but I know many feel differently. I would not knowingly buy a dipped coin though I'm sure I have!

These are necessarily different things. There are plenty of bright white coins out there that have had nothing done to them, just as there are plenty of coins whose "dirt and grime" was applied by a human.

Simply being white doesn't mean something was done, just as simply being dirty or dark doesn't mean it's original.

As for which one I prefer, it honestly depends on the coin. I can like either look

I prefer AU and MS with "light" toning as well but the color can be strong. SO heavy color toning is nice as long as the coin is light and shows originality. I would only buy original skinned coins knowingly. I assume by heavy toning you mean darker coins? I'm personally less intersted in dark coins. The color can be very deep but if the coin is not dark its usually nice IMO. Blast white coins are fine with me as long as they seem original, but I pretty much only buy toned coins with as much natural seeming color as I can find.

One thing I like about cac is they seem to be good at verifying originality.

If we are talking mint state coins: Colorful toning preferred, personally. Blast white is fine so long the mint luster is there. Attests to the originality and can assure it wasnt altered or dipped poorly

If we are talking circulated coins, I love the dark circulated cameo look.

I prefer all my coins to look as if they were just minted.
