I started coin collecting at the same age when my grandfather gave me a 1951 Florin.
My dad gave me a 1826 George 1V Shilling, at about age 12. I still have it.
I had a job from 12 ears old, and saved my money to buy my first coin a couple of years later: an 1883 'S' shield Half Sovereign. By age 21, my gold type set was complete: 9 sovereigns and an Adelaide Pound, and 7 Half Sovereigns, all of Sydney Mint.
I asked myself: "I have completed a set, so what series can I collect that would be impossible to complete?" Answer: ancient coins.
Have been collecting ancient coins and World coins since age 21, many decades ago. That includes about 200 U.S. coins to date.
I am still learning, because the subject of numismatics is huge.
