Need Help Identifying This Well Worn Copper. (Id: Canadian Blacksmith Token)

Tim Elgin New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 02/17/2021 12:34 pm I'm having trouble finding a silhouette pattern to match this. I know it is very worn and that makes it harder. The problem I am having is that I can find some that are very close and then I run into the problem....both the obverse and reverse are facing the same direction. Could it be counterfeit? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

There should be more legend visible with that much other detail showing. I have seen Britannia facing left and right on others but I too cannot find this variety. to CCF Report this Post to the Staff

blargish Valued Member United States 178 Posts	Posted 02/18/2021 11:48 pm That's a Wood 23 blacksmith copper. These circulated in Lower Canada in the mid to late 1830s. Charlton lists the variety as BL-40A1 with a straight reverse or BL-40A2 with an upset reverse. If I'm not mistaken, the A1's tend to be of a heavier weight than the A2's, and the progressive deterioration of the obverse die is coupled to decreasing weight. Report this Post to the Staff
