This 1939 nickel has the number 2 at the bottom of the 1 in the date.what caused this? Any ideas?

Actually that is the bottom of the '1'. The gunk is distracting your eyes.

Appears to be the foot of a normal 1, perhaps with a circulation ding/hit and some gunk getting in the way. Considering the size of the purported 2, it's awful small in terms of the size of the 'type faces/fonts' used on the nickel series.
