As my name implies I am new to coin collecting. I recently found this 1943P nickel while ro; hunting. Could someone tell me if this is a smaller P above the regular mint mark P.

What you're seeing are two scratches that coincidentally look a bit like a P.

Remember, in order for something to be an extra on a coin, it would need to be raised, the same size as the devices, and other devices would be present, with a doubling all the other devices doubled. (That would mean a double strike and it would affect both sides of the coin) so to have a single device extra, just couldn't happen on today's dies.
