Probably a very small change. BUt I have a dollar in bronze which was in a very big collection with many rare pieces. It has been mounted and the edge is ribbed. I hope it is a first strike and it seems strange that it would be a forgery even though the changes are high.

I thought the best place for some insight is over here with the American collectors and experts.

Do you have the weight?
My first impression is that it I a counterfeit.

Also that is a 20 Dollar coin known as a Double Eagle

Back then the mint struck all sorts of trial coins in all sorts of metals. I'm not a student of the era but I do know it was a common practice.

There are some $20 pattern coins in copper from that era (search Heritage archives for "$20 pattern"), but I can't think of any reason a trial or pattern coin would be struck with a mint mark. A branch mint wouldn't be messing around making their own off-metal planchets, etc. For that reason I'd have to say counterfeit or replica, maybe specifically for a jewelry piece. Obviously the weight is quite low - a regular double eagle is 33.44g. Is there any evidence that it was once gold plated?

Did a little more searching, there were no trial 20 dollar coins struck in 1882

William Barber designed a $50 gold pattern in 1877 with a similar design. Everything is much the same except the S mint mark and twenty dollar. It looks like a novelty piece based on the $50 gold pattern.

Interesting. Here's another 1882-S copper double eagle contemporary counterfeit, with some of the gold plating still intact. There's some verdigris on Liberty's hair. Finding another one pretty much rules out this being a mint trial, but it no doubt has collector value.

You'll have to google it. imgur links aren't permitted.

I did find a detecting find piece in google. Out of curiosity what is a contemporary forgery worthy for a collector? I have seen them in early dutch coins and britain types. But I am not familair with coins like this. I don't collect these pieces myself.
