Quote:@numis let me know if you need any recommendations. There is a coin shop you should go to. https://icc.com.pt/# Is this the "Brothers" coin shop? If so, I'm planning to visit it. Do you know if they speak English? Because my Portuguese is non-existent.

Numis, it is the Brothers coin shop and yes they speak English. Make sure they understand you are a serious collector. They keep the good stuff hidden, you have to ask for it :) Right next to the Coin Shop there is a Brewery/Restaurant, I recommend it. https://brasao.pt/en/

I haven't had a lot of time today as work was busy. But I didn't want to leave you without a picture. As can be seen, I had to pick up another case for raw coins and my slabbed box of 20 now has 22 coins. So don't know if I should get another slabbed box. These are good problems to have, I know.

Go for the next box. Then enjoy continually ranking the top 20. Quote: These are good problems to have, I know. Indeed.

First coin up is a 1928 20 Escudos. I actually have this coin in Raw (and much better struck), but this MS63 came up at a good price so I decided to get it. Honestly after getting it, I wasn't impressed. Its very soft struck, looked much better in pictures. The hunt continues for a GEM example. I may or may not keep this one long term. In the slab. Issuer: Portugal Issuing regime: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Circulating commemorative coins Year: 1928 Value: 10 Escudos (10 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.835) Weight: 12.5 g Diameter: 30 mm Orientation: Medal alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM579 Mintage:200,000 This coin commemorates the Battle of Ourique which took place on 25 July 1139, in which the forces of Portuguese count Afonso Henriques (of the House of Burgundy) defeated those led by the Almoravid governor of Córdoba, Muhammad Az-Zubayr Ibn Umar, driving the Moors from Northern Portugal. And as to why it was issued on the 789th anniversary. From JECZ79 ". Portuguese commemorative coins used to be minted to finance specific things with the profits. The 1928 10 escudos was minted to finance a monument to the battle. There had been a military coup in 1926 and Portugal was going through the commemorations of origins typical of those decades in europe. But the state was almost broke. So they issued a commemorative with a higher face value than the silver it contained. It had the same silver as the 50 centavos issued in 1912 to 1918."

Quote: Understood. Looks nice to me though. The coin isn't ugly, it actually looks really nice, you can tell its uncirculated, but the soft strike (after seeing the chain metal on the raw one) actually bothers me. I was tempted to return it, but the price was great so for now its a keeper. All the ones I saw in Portugal actually looked much worse. This is a coin that few gems exist, if BU, they generally have a soft strike, the AU ones sometimes you find one with a good strike. I have not found a BU with a good strike.

Nice looking coin, hfjacinto, regardless of the strike. Good luck on your continuing hunt!

Quote: They keep the good stuff hidden What do you mean? They keep the expensive stuff hidden, or the original, non-cleaned stuff? Or....?

Thanks all, The other coin was all JCZ's fault as he posted a beautiful coin from Azores. I had to get one also. The coin has a really pretty blue/green toning. In the slab. This coin was only a 1 year issue. Issuer: Azores (Portugal) King Charles I (Carlos I) (1889-1908) Type: Standard circulation coins Year:1901 Value: 5 Reis Currency: Real (decimalized, 1843-1911) Composition: Copper Weight: 4.9 g Diameter: 25.4 mm Thickness: 1 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: 1915 References: KM16 Mintage: 800,000 The 5 and 10 reis are the easiest and lowest cost to find.
