Two explorers for the price of one! The 1904 and 1905 Gold Dollars for the Lewis and Clark Exposition. (A two-headed gold coin issued in 1904 and 1905.) The coins present a portrait of Captain Merriwether Lewis on the obverse, with the reverse featuring Second Lieutenant William Clark; Lewis referred to Clark as "Captain" and viewed him as a co-leader of their expedition, but his official Army rank was the subordinate Second Lieutenant. .

Moses Cleaveland was an explorer/surveyor who traveled into northeastern Ohio in 1796; he was there on behalf of the Connecticut Land Company (he was an investor/part owner) to explore and survey the area and assess its economic potential. He selected the site of present-day Cleveland during his expedition. The area was considered a part of Connecticut at the time, and was often referred to as the Connecticut Western Reserve or New Connecticut. A left-facing portrait of Cleaveland is seen on the obverse of the 1936 Cleveland, OH Centennial - Great Lakes Exposition Half Dollar. The reverse presents a map of the Great Lakes region, with key port cities indicated by stars.

When I think about "Coins Featuring Explorers," the Balboa coins from Panama always come to mind. Nice additions!

Quote: It's called a caliper. Ah ok, I see it now - just looked funny on the coin - I used one when tracking soviet Naval units during my time in the Navy!
