Frontiersman Daniel Boone (b. 1724, d. 1820) explored and helped bring about the settlement of Kentucky - an effort that began in the late 1760s and continued into the 1770s. The US issued a multi-year program to mark the bicentennial of Boone's birth. The coin series began in 1934 and continued through 1938.

I realize other examples of this coin have already been posted, but what type of US commemorative coin collector would I be if I didn't include one of my examples? Here's the first US commemorative half dollar. Christopher Columbus is presented on the obverse and his ship - the Santa Maria - is seen on the reverse. The coin was a two-year Type, with coins issued in 1892 and 1893 for the World's Columnian Exposition that was held in Chicago, Illinois.

I'm thinking that the Apollo XI crew would fall into the "Explorer" category. Gold, silver and copper-nickel (CuNi) clad coins were issued by the US in 2019 - they all shared a common design. Though their faces are not depicted, the reverse design used on the coins presents Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the surface of the moon. Aldrin is seen via a close-up view of his helmet and visor, with Neil Armstrong being seen as a reflection in the visor (the included shadow is Aldrin's). I previously posted about the joint US-Australia Apollo XI coin issue. You can see/read about it here: - 2019 Royal Australian Mint - US Mint Apollo 11 Joint Issue Set
