ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19284 Posts	Posted 02/26/2023 4:29 pm Given that the coin is a zinc core Memorial cent, I'm thinking we have a plating issue--perhaps very early stage split plating, which will lead to zinc rot--not uncommon with 1980s zinc cents. I just came across some information that explains this to the tee "A corrosion dome formed around the Mint mark of this 1983-D Lincoln Cent and later burst through and emptied out.
