Hey Folks,
I'm sure this is nothing, but I was wondering if the group has some input as to the cause of this particular marking around the MM. Poor Lincoln has gone through a tough life in this circulation. LOL
Thanks in advance!

Given that the coin is a zinc core Memorial cent, I'm thinking we have a plating issue--perhaps very early stage split plating, which will lead to zinc rot--not uncommon with 1980s zinc cents.

Thanks, ijn1944! I hear what you are saying, and agree. The odd part is that the circle around the MM is fairly a perfect circle.

Really appreciate all the feedback! I just came across some information that explains this to the tee "A corrosion dome formed around the Mint mark of this 1983-D Lincoln Cent and later burst through and emptied out. Information provided by Mike Diamond" Here is the link to CoinWorld (It is the 7th one presented, so click right), https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...es-vary.html
Was fortunate that the example is a 1983D LMC.
