NGC - Coin of the Day: For Mint Error Monday, here's a Great Britain coin that wasn't supposed to exist: a 1983 2 New Pence obverse muled with a 1982 2 Pence reverse. Bidding is already up to several hundred dollars for this coin in a Heritage Auctions Coins sale: https://coins.ha.com/itm/great-brit...1575-25197.s
NGC have labelled the coin incorrectly. The 1982 2p has a 'Two Pence' reverse, exactly like the normal 1983 2p. It's the 2p coins issued from 1971 to 1981 that have the 'New Pence' reverse.
I agree, jbuck. It's one I'd love to have in my collection. The 1983 2p was NIFC and most of the mules have been found in special promotional sets that were given away by drinks manufacturers in exchange for proofs of purchase. It was all part of an attempt to familiarise the public with the new £1 coin that entered circulation that year.
