Imagine my surprise when I looked at my change and saw a really nice looking 1999 D Nickel here:
1999-D-Nickel---From-Finding-A-Dream-Coin-To-Collapse-The-Dream-Altogher

only to turn it over and seeing pretty nice looking steps, only to see the gouge right in the middle of the steps
1999-D-Nickel---From-Finding-A-Dream-Coin-To-Collapse-The-Dream-Altogher
and then the other gouge between 'five' and 'cents'.

How badly does damage like that affect the over-all grading of the coin?

Given the images posted, the '99 D likely falls in the low to mid AU range. In addition to the hits on the reverse, the obverse is showing circulation dings as well--perhaps not as dramatic, but they're there. Coin could be a decent album hole filler until better comes along.

It's a nicely circulated AU coin - no numismatic premium but a nice album filler.

Keep in mind that FS on modern nickels is not that big of a deal like it is for older ones. Newer nickels are expected to be FS.

It's basically a spender, I'm afraid.
