Low Grade 1817 Cent Newcomb ? - Coin Community Forum

I was thinking N7 but I don't see the mouse on the head but there is a spike or something or possibly N8. They were the only two varieties I could find with a double denticle on the reverse below the N of United. Report this Post to the Staff

Looking specifically at the "1" in the date, I would have bet this could NOT be a Newcomb 8 (or 10, 11, 12 for that matter). Am I not reading / understanding the attached snip correctly? HELP! Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 09/20/2023 1:17 pm This shows why you need the specific books for a given series. My guess is that image is from the Breen Encyclopedia of US and Colonial coins. N-8, 10, 11, and 12 all have wide dates, but they all also come from different obv dies and the date spacing is different on each of them. The pictured coin is N-11 and it does have the 1 very far left. It is even further left on N-12. The N-8 is a "wide date", but it is much more compact than on the other three. (capitalization mine) is a bit misleading. So now the S.O. can also say "You need ANOTHER book!?!?" in addition to "..... another coin". LOL Report this Post to the Staff
