This is my oldest with a legible date - France Double Tournois 1626. I don't know much about it, just wanted a coin that was possibly handled by my ancestors.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Quote: France Double Tournois 1626 Not a royal issue but Principality of Dombes, under Marie de Bourbon-Montpensier (r. 1608-27). Numista 54320 (legend subtype b2). Interesting coin! Not a very common type AFAIK.

Beautiful coin, mrwiskers! SquareCircle - your 1567 English coin was definitely a sixpence. Yours was a hammered one - they are slightly larger than the milled ones and there are circles arounnd the shield on the reverse and portrait on the obverse. This is my 1565 sixpence which I bought for £1 when I was 13 years old and which was my oldest dated coin for many years!

Excellent coins, everyone! This thread inspired me to dig out some unidentified hammered coins that were tucked away. One was this German States Free City of Kempton ½ Batzen from 1519.

My oldest dated coin is in pretty poor shape, but with a magnifying glass I can just make out 1666. 1666 Sweden 1 ore This is my next oldest and a little esier to make out 1671. 1671 Sweden 1/6 ore.

A nice grouping of coins on this thread! My earliest dated coin from England is an Ireland issued shilling from Elizabeth I, 1561.

An example from Transylvania. Johann II. A 1565 Necessity Thaler (28.68 gm). Wolf with crescent and star. It's just a bit larger than a US silver dollar. The reverse of this coin is plain/unstruck.
