Which is why I'm stumped about this one. I'd like others to weigh in on whether I found a possible error proof. The error being that it's a proof. Tell me yay or nay on whether you believe it could be or is... And any other comments you'd like to add that could be helpful! Thanks much! Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6948 Posts	Posted 07/21/2024 4:06 pm This looks like a deeply struck 2004-D nickel. It does have sharp details and nice relief, which probably indicates an earlier die state. Later die state examples of that year can be fuzzy with deterioration or struck shallowly. Quote: It was minted in Denver - Denver NEVER made proof coins. Not to split hairs on this particular point, but there are well known examples of proof reverses getting used on circulation strike coins. Dimes come to mind. It would be rare, but not entirely out of the question. Particularly for 2004 and 2005, since all sorts of oddities could have happened around the half-year design changes. We do, for example, have two doubled dies for those years, even though it's a single squeeze hubbing process. Report this Post to the Staff

Quote: but there are well known examples of proof reverses getting used on circulation strike coins Even if proof dies were used, that wouldn't mean it was a proof. It's a different process for proof planchets. Report this Post to the Staff

Lots of circulated coins accidently got struck with proof dies - think of the Wide AM and Close AM cents Collecting since 1972. Learning from then on "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember.
