1964 UK Half Penny -Wrong Planchet - Coin Community Forum

first4 Valued Member Australia 100 Posts	Posted 08/14/2024 08:13 am Hi Guys, I think there is something wrong with this 1964 1/2 penny. I think they used a Copper Nickel planchet at mint rather than bronze. Its 29mm and 5.69g. Non magnetic. The edge is flat. Any other examples of this error? Maybe a planchet from another country. Sap Moderator Australia 16817 Posts	Posted 08/14/2024 10:39 pm Perhaps a "quick counterfeit" - take a halfpenny, plate it silver, and hey presto, it can pass as a shilling, for a handy 240% profit (minus the cost of the electroplating rig). Pass it face-up, and you can barely tell that it's not a shilling unless you happen to notice the edge is plain. Doing this was (and still is) quite illegal, of course, since the only reason you'd do it is to make a counterfeit.
