I love that Pomeranian griffin. Continuing the theme, here is a 1/24 thaler from Livonia for 1616. I like that dog as a minmaster's mark left of the cross reverse (or is it a fox?).   |

One more from the same part of the world for 1616, a Polish 1/4 thaler. In addition to the date being together on the reverse (instead of split between obverse and everse as we saw in the 1620s), the engraver has given the ruff collar a nice 3-dimensional look only for 1615 and 1616:   |

My last Poland 1/4 thaler with Sigismund III for 1615, with his earliest bust (for this denomination):   I would dearly like to have a thaler of his in my collection, but haven't been able to open my wallet that wide (would be the most Ive ever paid for a coin). Edited by tdziemia

Got distracted away from this thread (and, to an extent, forum) for a while. Here's a catch-up first, for 1616...   Sigismund III, 1616, ternar/trzeciak (= 3 denar) Poznan mint? (attributed to Krakow in some catalogs) Kopicki 582, Numista 96636IIRC this type is, unusually for a (nonrecent) post-1600 coin, not in Krause. |

And here's a much more common coin dated 1615...   Livonia under Poland, solidus (schilling), 1615. Riga mint. KM# 5 (not sure for which country), Numista 78799. Looks like the same type as Spence's 1616. Apparently the mintmaster's mark is supposed to be a fox, not a dog - though on my blurry photo it's hard to see any mark there at all! |

Looks like some mint luster in the fields? That's something I have on a few of my Livonian solidi, and I've wondered how it comes about. Do the other parts of the die wear more quickly? One more from 1615 since no 1614s have been posted yet. This Polish 3 kreuzer (probably a candidate for slabbing if I were into that):   |

Hungary Denar 1614:   I have a pretty large number of these Hungarian Denars from the 16th Century and a few from the 15th, but I'm pretty sure that this is my only one from the the 17th. "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."
