As the only Mint making Lincoln Cents that year, Denver was under high pressure. Cents without a Denver "D" mintmark emerged, just like in this top-pop, strong reverse example. I'll never have a 1909-S VDB due to the price and not wanting a slick, but it's at least legit. That's what the copper Mint Set tokens are for, right? Multiple coins were struck that were exactly the same, which creates the variety status. Removing the MM happened while intentionally polishing the die.
