A Commemorative Philippus Uniface? - Coin Community Forum

jdsstrat Valued Member United States 258 Posts	Posted 02/13/2025 9:28 pm Little by little, I have been going through a collection that I inherited from my grandfather then posting for help from the experts in this forum. So far the feedback has been extremely helpful. What I am wondering about the item below is if it is possible that it could have been struck in Philippus' time as a kind of souvenir to commemorate the Roman millenium. You will notice that it is a uniface, with the lettering of the obverse visible from behind as well as the detail of the raised image of Philippus. Of course, there is an excellent chance that I am way off base here, hence the post. Thank you in advance for anything anyone has to share. Report this Post to the Staff

The style of the portrait and lettering is not correct for a genuine Philip I coin. Also, the antoninianus (this denomination with the radiate crown on the emperor) should be visibly silver. And yes, I have not been able to find this particular image of Philip anywhere in the online resources I have combed. So a contemporary knockoff was always on my mind. I posted it, though, to be sure it wasn't some needle in a haystack, since it was becoming clear to me as I looked that celebrating the Roman millenium through the production of a variety of coins/medals/tokens, some perhaps as souvenirs, was extensive.
