I'm a Danco album guy. My oldest are only about 15 years old, but seem to be as good as new. I'm also to cheap to purchase their slip cover cases.
When working with an older, used Whitman album I have, I noticed when inserting the plastic slide strips that much of the glue on the outer layer of each page was very brittle, weak, and loosing up where the plastic slides could fall out due to being too lose. I don't intend this post to be a Danco v. Whitman argument. I only mention the Whitman because it made me think about how long a Dansco can last -- especially when left out on, sitting on a shelf. How long until its glue starts to dry out and fail too? Maybe the brown plastic cracks?
Normally I've been keeping my albums in zip-lock bags with some desiccant packs, and then those in a plastic storage container in a temperature stable room. But lately, while working recently to fill some slots in albums, I've let some of them out, sitting on a bookshelf. In the winter here, it can get very dry indoors.
I'm sure a few months of this would be fine. But what about long-term or permanently? What kind of different in lifetimes are these albums looking at with "proper" storage or just sitting out?
Hopefully the answer is that both options last >50 years and I don't have to worry about it.
I look forward to hearing about some stories about Dansco's that are 40-50 years old themselves and how they've held up (or not) over time.

My two oldest Dansco albums were purchased December 1984. Number three was bought early 1985, and then three more were bought in 1986. That is six Dansco albums in use for 37~40 years. I have several more, which I began buying in the early 1990s. Mine are kept in a dark environmentally controlled space, so I cannot speak for albums kept on an open shelf with exposure to sunlight, etc. All that being said, I have no complaints.

Same...my Danscos look as good as they day I bought them, but then again so do my Whitman albums. All are on a shelf in an air conditioned office/house and not in direct sunlight. They all are clean, crisp, sharp and bright. No fading.
Also for consideration, many Danscos come with slip covers, or they can be purchased... those help tremendously.
