Okay, so, in an instance like this.... What the heck is this? And what is the difference between this and a standard 1939 Jefferson? And what are some of the other varieties out there? The steps got the squared-off termination on both ends, and the S in Pluribus got a clear serif. In 1939, the Mint was still using the original hubs from 1938. However, the 1939 nickels were struck well into 1940. At some point, the Mint started using the new 1940 reverse hub to make working dies to finish the 1939 run. Thus, some 1939 nickels were struck with the Reverse of 1938, and others were struck with the Reverse of 1940. Report this Post to the Staff
Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6619 Posts	Posted 06/13/2025 2:38 pm As to varieties, there are many doubled dies, repunched mint marks, overmintmarks, the 1943/2 overdate, and other oddities for Jefferson nickels. The JN major varieties are fewer than many other denominations, making them easier to collect. A good place to start is the PCGS price guide site. Most nickels with attributable Cherrypicker Guide varieties (which tend to be the most dramatic and valuable) will have a little drop down + where you can see the varieties.
