Continuing our theme of bargain-priced proof nickels, I picked up this 1994-P matte finish SMS nickel for less than $6. The seller pics showed a faint fingerprint, but under light, this coin has a ton of prints. It also has blobs of something on the collar, forehead, and face. Maybe PVC from improper storage in a humid environment? I have it soaking in acetone now, and I will post some full coin pictures after a long soak.

I am open to suggestions on this poor nickel. If nothing else, I can put it into my proof nickel album, but it seems a shame to waste a rare and appreciated coin.

Oh my!

Acetone works when they are fresh, but I am sure it is already etched into the surface.

The results from the acetone were pretty good! Like you guys said, those fingerprints are permanent. But the splotches on the temple, cheekbone, and collar came off. The reverse has a pleasant iridescent toning. In the axial box, the coin looks relatively nice. If you angle it in the light, not so much, but I would assume that's why I got a $25-35 coin for $1 plus shipping. =P

That turned out well. To me they don't look like fingerprints the lines are so straight. But can't offer an alternative.
