As previewed in last year's update, this "By the Numbers" post about Canada's modern non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) 36 millimeter, commemorative Silver Dollar ("SD") series addresses only the active King Charles III series. You can view my final Queen Elizabeth II census Here.SDs bearing the obverse portrait of King Charles III (vs. Queen Elizabeth II) began with the 2024 issues. This update covers the 2024 through June 2026 period.
Note: I posted my first "By the Numbers" tracker back in 2012. In thst first census, I listed 58 design types and 103 total SDs in a complete collection. The Queen Elizabeth II era grew to include over 150 SD types and varirties - I wonder how large the King Charles III series will grow?2024 saw the issue of four SDs, 2025 and 2026 (so far) have had three releases each. The recent price advances in the precious metals market have caused the 2026 SDs to jump significantly in issue price - prices have eclipsed the $200 (CAD) mark for the individual releases and >$450 (CAD) for the Proof Set with Selectively Gold-Plated SD! It seems plausible to think that the increases have put the coins out of range for some collectors.
As I've stated previously, I use this data table to track the different categories of R C M 36 mm SDs. It should be thought of as more of a category census than an issue-by-issue collecting checklist or value tracker. The data is meant only to define and quantify the various 36 mm SD types issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. It does not/will not include images of the 160+ coins of the QEII/KCIII series.
As with past lists, large-format coins (e.g., those of the Renewed Silver Dollar series) are not included in this census, nor are the smaller silver Loon dollars - just 36 mm SDs from 2024 hrough 2026. I consider the
Peace dollar coins to be a separate series, and thus don't include them here either.
It's up to each collector to decide if he/she would like to include non-36 mm SDs as part of their SD collection. For me, I stick with the 36 mm size of Canada's traditional circulating SD - it keeps things simple for me.
