Wow those are truly some nice coins. I've been drooling over every single one of them. But there's a shortage of water here is Southern CA so I should stop.

Great looking coins...how does a coin get toned? what is the process? say starting with a brand new 2009 lincoln...and ending with a nicely toned 2009 lincoln...

Here is BadThad's explanation: Toning is caused by exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The sulfur reacts with the metal surface to form the corresponding metal + sulfur. Light refracts differently based on the thickness of the layer. It's kind of like how light + water droplets form a rainbow. The book Coin Chemistry details H2S and its role in toning very well, it's worth a read. Just for fun, I placed a 1964 Unc Washington quarter outside of a window, and I'm waiting to see if it shows any signs of toning. BTW, very nice nickels Southern Yankee. Those are some nice proofs.

I recently got an album full of Rosies. Nothing too special, but some of them had some really nice golden toning. I'll probably post them later when I get the chance. Okay here's one of the Rosies. Has excellent eye appeal and the reverse has some really nice golden toning:

Nice Lincoln, coindexter. Are you assembling a set from 1909-1958? Like I mentioned before, I put a silver quarter outside of a window, and it seems to show a little hint of toning. Has anyone tried this before?

Well I figured I'd throw mine up here. It's another Roosevelt, but it's kind of a weird reddish purple. My photo is terrible, but I think it's kind of nice.
