Thanks for the comments on the toner, guys. I took a chance with this '74-S: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-S-US-E...PNL:LNLK:ITMIt looks like it has nice toning, which is common for this year. Sometimes it only appears this way through the holder, but I'm hoping for another colorful gem. I'll take pics of the coin out of the holder when I receive it. Stay tuned. . . .  |

Darth..anytime your buying toned coins, email Rob Erzerman first...hate to burst your bubble here, but, here goes(I wrote him concerning some of these online earlier this year..something didn't seem "right" to me, and, he confirmed)..gassed..AT

Forgot to mention that Sego got a half dozen of these into PCGS holders, those were the days when he was THE Ike authority and was pushing the concept of "Market Acceptible" toning as fit to be in PCGS holders.

I've learned the hard way of course, to always post a pic on the IKEGROUP.INFO first, and ask the seasoned veterans what they think. They will give an honest opinion. One of my forgery IKE on a 1c planchet drew skepticism I posted in June(and, I GLOWINGLY posted in here as my best find ever)..he was spot on...a Bulgarian Mint Made Fake..a 5k lesson..luckily, paypal refunded my money.

Oh, so the slabbed one I got is AT, even though it's in a new PCGS holder? Or are you talking about the 74-S? If you're referring to the slabbed Ike, why wouldn't PCGS designate it as such? Thanks for the info. I also think that kryptonitecomics gets a steady supply of these.

Coins can be sent in for reholdering, if scratched and old..Most IKEGROUP guys, if not ALL did not find the kryptonite coins to be valid. Where they got them is unknown, and, none of my business. All I know is buyer beware, when it comes to toners...slabbed or not. It takes years of experience to know the difference between NT & AT, but, when the coin ONLY has coloring on IKE, and not in fields(as was the case with a lot of the june offerings), it became very suspicious. Natural coins tend to tone from the outside in. Ringed pastel rainbow colors, not brighter oranges and such. My hunch? A deal was cut for a bulk purchase of these from an old-time dealer, to a new dealer. Date of original grading would allow more detective work, but, that is not the way PCGS works. I don't mean to be rude about all of this...trying to pass along facts as I know them.

I will admit that it did remind me of the kryptonitecomics OGP Ikes, but since it was in a problem-free holder I didn't question it beyond that. Regardless, it is a very nice coin, AT or not. What I don't like is that it made it into a problem-free PCGS holder. That is very concerning to me.  I guess the "unquestionable" and "almighty" PCGS just lets something like this slide every now and then. But, hey, it's not a total loss to me. There is an enigmatic story tied to these toned Ikes now, and what happened is directly referenced to in auction descriptions by kryptonitecomics. Ikes in Canada! Next time I'll bring a list so I'll know which ones are the rarer ones. Sadly no 1973 in the bin.   I've always loved the reverse design, and a silver dollar sized coin is a nice big canvas to put that down on. |
