We all love toned coins..and IKES, for this thread...not to be a doom & gloomer...BUT..remember..years ago, when PCGS first opened for business, a savy, and unsavory unnamed coin dealer sent in a LOT of artificially toned IKES(sulfurized in his oven, at 95 degrees, over 2 weeks did the trick)...since PCGS was in it's infancy, and, didn't have modern "Sniffers"(chemical detecting machines they use now, to detect altered coins), MANY passed and got certified. MANY have hit the market...they all have a certain "too bright" a look, and, once you've seen a few, you know from a mile away.."There's another one"...these coins would NOT get slabbed by any TPG today. So, some don't mind if AT or NT..most do, like me. When you see natural toning, and begin to get a grasp on the limits of such, and, the beauty of metal toning, yes, it is a wonderful thing to own...these altered coins I see on here are not MY cup of tea, but, that's the beauty of collecting..to each their own...I only post this so the buyers can think about a limit for buying/bidding on these coins..5% over book is about as high as you should go...for real NT coins, depends on the coin...true "Monster Toning" is quite rare, and, most who own them NEVER sell them.
1 last thing...there are ways to tone IKES AFTER they have been slabbed...gasses CAN get into the plastic..it takes 6 months to do, so, most scumbags don't mess with it...MANY DO, and, then put em up for sale...again...easy to spot...just not natural looking.
Caveat Emptor IKE People.

Speaking of AT Ikes, I purchased these on Great Collections Sunday night. I received them today, and I gotta say that I absolutely love the 73-S. I don't even care that it's a details coin. The same goes for the 76-S, although I much prefer the look of the 73-S. I have a plan for them as I'm working on a customized "scrapbook" type album for my next Ike set (set #5). This set will be comprise of some AT coins, but most will be honest. I just like the look of variation in an album. I'm not willing to go crazy on the prices, though.

I think the "better" AT Ikes are popular with collectors because they know that this series will never produce the monsters that are seen in the Morgan series. I have no doubt that many would believe these to be genuine toners, but I'm sure there are also many who know better- and still wouldn't care. This is the joy of collecting- not falling into the mindset that there is only one "proper" way to collect.

Now for the pics. . . .

IlikeIkes,

Would you consider these NT or AT? I found them in a $1000 bag of Ikes a few months back.

Looks natural to me. Regardless, the price was certainly right.

That's a cool one, ilikeikes. That sure is a strange pattern, much like my self-designated "lightsaber strike" Ike:

Another successful bidding campaign on Great Collections last night. I got my first designated *STAR* Ike:

Post-An-Ike-Eisenhower-Dollar

I don't see too many toned 1972 proofs, so I had to try to get this one. Toning seems to be mostly reserved for the 1971 and 1974 issues. 1972 seems to be the scarcest in toned fashion.

Nice pickups darthmorgan. I think I may do another dansco in all toned Ikes after seeing some of the ones posted. So Now I'm looking at having at least 4 ful sets. When will the madness end?

Here is the other one I posted earlier in the thread. I can't get the picture to show the true toning, but in hand it's a monster.

Yep, I can tell it's a monster. Capturing toning on silver proof coins is difficult to do.
