Possible Proof Planchet Ike

I bought a circulated a '72D Ike for $1.25 that is incredibly shinny at my LCS. Could that year's Denver Mint Ikes be copper clad proof planchets?

- Jim

PS I'll try to get a pic up this weekend.

Jim,

Yes, it is possible San Francisco sent Denver rejected proof planchets. I have seen this in 71-D and 76-D Type 1s... One 76-D Type 1 I had even had cameo frost on the letters and devices.

I have not seen a 72-D like this- but it certainly is possible.

Jim,
It is absolutely possible that the 72 D you purchased was minted on a
proof planchet that was not quite up to quality for San Francisco.
Denver was the recipient of a good number of them. Finding Denver
minted Ike's that were struck on proof planchets is a little
pet peeve of mine in my Ike collecting.
A link with a little more information for you on one of my favorite
type of Ikes.

cc, don't you think a coin with frosted letters and devices would have been struck from a proof die sent to Denver?

Very nice coins. I particularly like bishftl's '73 SB above.
