Different design. These are much much rarer than the small size, especially this date. I too wanted to pay $1000 so I may pass on it, but I'll have to see.
I agree that $1000 is as high as I would go. Now if you know the dealer well and they guaranteed it would grade problem-free VF35 or your money back, then I'd go $1150.
I've dealt with him before and hes a forum member on another forum, but I haven't dealt with him extensively. He did admit that it was 'lightly dipped but retoned almost completely'.
There is also the consideration that I am not seeking this for type, just because I like it. I'd have to get a good price for that reason. If this were a bust dime (an 1811 or something) where it was borderline, I'd probably take it. I just filled by 1824 slot with a minorly impaired XF, which would have cost me greatly otherwise.
I decided to pass on it for this reason. Its not a bad coin, but because its not going to go into one of my sets, the price is too high.
