Any idea why the "1" in the date would be worn like that when the rest is sharp?

My 1881 3-Cent has a weak struck '1' also. Just a weak strike. Cool grain appearance in the Nickel (lines about 45 degrees on the obverse and reverse).

Is that a weak strike or a worn die? I'm guessing it's a worn die... =)

I'll say grease got into that cavity on the die.
Rest in Peace

Yep, I've seen many striking issues on 3CN's. Details look F-12

Looks like an F-12, possibly F-15. I agree that its most likely a weak strike that caused it.

On the Three Cent piece theirs probably more weak strikes than good strikes. I actually have a bunch of the Three Cent pieces and most have weak strikes. The coin is still worth over 20 dollars.
