A dealer in Vancouver was telling me this week that a few years ago there was a rumour about that someone had simply deposited 4 $500 bills that were crisp and fresh at the bank. Got their $2000 and were happy...he said he did not believe it until a while later when he saw that the museum had acquired 4 new ones. I am not sure if the story is true.. but can believe it.
Rest in Peace

Back in 1998-9, when banks and others were preparing for possible y2k problems, the Huntington National Bank in Columbus, OH did a thoro check of some vaults. For years, they just checked off one with a notation of the face value of the contents.

They opened it for an actual inventory, and found a hoard of $500 and up, I think as high as $10,000, but perhaps only $5000. Depressed the market for years!

This note is one of my favorites in Canada. The 1911 500$ is also very nice with only 3 known.
